Surgical revision and removal of breast implants is becoming a common choice of women who want to look and feel their best. Though the reasons may vary from aesthetics to comfort, women who have breast implant removal performed by Board-certified Naples plastic surgeon, Dr. Kiran Gill, can be confident that they are under the care of a highly-accomplished female plastic surgeon.
Reasons to have breast implants removed
The decision to have a surgical procedure to remove breast implants can be the result of aesthetics or complications after augmentation, including:
- Implants too large
- Implants too small
- A wish to return to natural breast size
- Older implants requiring replacement
- Breast implant rupture
- Asymmetry
- Drooping (ptosis)
- Infection
- ALCL
- Capsular contracture
- Implant rupture
- Symmastia (implants meet in center of chest)
- High-riding implant
- Nipples point down
- To relieve back and shoulder pain due to weight of large implants
Replacing older breast implants
The fact that breast implants do not last forever and eventually need to be exchanged or removed is a common reason for choosing to undergo implant replacement. As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Gill performs these surgeries with great technical skill.
Some women initially felt desirable and more attractive after breast augmentation, but over time, grew to view large breasts as cumbersome and a hindrance to their confidence and current lifestyle.

Breast implant removal and reshaping natural breast tissue
As the implants will have created an excess of skin, if the implants are being removed without replacement, reshaping of the natural breast tissue is necessary. Dr. Gill will carefully resculpt each breast so that your remaining tissue is rounded, lifted and natural in appearance. The areolas may require reshaping in your procedure.
Patient health and safety
Our office staff is fully trained in every aspect of breast implant removal surgery and the recovery period, and your surgery is performed with stringent health and safety procedures. We always put your health, comfort, and safety first. Dr. Gill will discuss with you all questions regarding your procedure and will explain fully what to expect in breast implant removal surgery, recovery, and final appearance.
What is the surgical procedure?
Breast implant removal/replacement is performed under general anesthetic for maximum comfort and to ensure the procedure achieves optimal aesthetics. The original incision is reopened to remove the implant, along with any hardened scar tissue, and the remaining tissue reshaped, with excess skin removed. Drains are inserted and the area bandaged. You will be given instructions for aftercare, including caring for the incision sites or drains.
What should I expect after my implants are removed?
In many cases, recovery from breast implant removal is slightly faster than recovery from augmentation. The surgery typically leads to a period of swelling and bruising, and you will need to plan for about five to ten days to recover. Many patients feel well enough to return to work or other activities in about one week. If the procedure was to resolve capsular contracture, the recovery may require a little longer.
What is recovery like?
In the early stages of healing, you must exercise great care to avoid lifting, stretching, or placing any stress on the incision sites, and wear the compression garment as directed by Dr. Gill. In the early stages of recovery, pain or discomfort can be managed with prescription medication. The entire healing process requires about three to four months, after which the scars have significantly faded.
As your breasts heal, you may discover you feel younger and more carefree, and certainly lighter if you have returned to your natural breast size or smaller implants. Your appearance will continue to improve as the breast tissue surrounding the implant adjusts.
Cost of breast revision and removal surgeries
The cost of breast revision or implant removal is typically in the range of $5,000 or more, based upon the extent of the surgical procedure. The costs include the surgery, anesthesiologist, and initial and follow-up appointments. As every procedure is customized and may require additional procedures such as implant replacement or an internal breast lift, the actual cost requires an evaluation of your current breast condition.
