Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast Augmentation RecoveryIn the past decade, breast augmentation plastic surgery has become safer and less invasive because of improved surgical techniques.

However, it still entails a significant recovery process to ensure safe and predictable results. The patient will receive detailed instructions for recovery from the plastic surgeon. She should follow these guidelines diligently for a quicker and easier recovery.

The surgeon and their team will assist the patient in preparing adequately for a smooth and rapid recovery. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiran Gill provides breast augmentation to patients in Naples, Marco Island, South Florida, and surrounding communities in the amazing state of Florida.

Expected Downtime

After breast augmentation cosmetic surgery, the patient will remain at home for around a week. For the initial 3 to 5 days, the patient should get sufficient rest but may perform light activities and short walks in her home. For the remainder of the week, she may undertake non-strenuous household chores, which do not put pressure on the incision sites.

The overall recovery duration and downtime will differ between patients dependent on the implant size, placement of implants above or beneath the pectoral muscle, the technique used by the surgeon, and the patient’s natural healing capabilities.

A majority of patients will return to their routine or resume work in around 10 to 14 days. But they should avoid vigorous exercises and lifting of heavy weights for about 30 days.

Post-Surgical Garments

The surgeon will provide a surgical bra to the patient, specifically in the event of submuscular implant placement.

The patient must wear this bra all the time for some weeks, except when taking a bath. In case the patient receives subglandular implant placement, she may only need a regular bra without underwire as the surgeon will place smaller incisions, and the healing will be more rapid.

A wrap-type bandage or a surgical bra helps to homogenize the implant with the tissue and muscle of the breast. Till the healing is complete, the patient can wear this bra to enable the breasts to attain their full natural shape.

No Smoking during Recovery

Post-op healing and smoking makes a bad combination. The nicotine content in tobacco can lead to blood vessel shrinkage, causing the reduction of blood oxygen levels. This will hinder red blood cell functionality, leading to a slow-down in the recovery process and heightening the risk of complications.

Prescription Pain Medications

The surgeon will typically prescribe mild pain meds in the initial week post breast augmentation to assist the patient in managing post-op pain and discomfort. The patient should avoid driving and other activities that require being alert while on pain medicines.

Follow-up Consultations

The surgeon may ask the patient to visit them a day after the procedure for the removal of bandages. The surgeon will replace the bandages with a surgical bra. But some surgeons may only ask the patient to visit them for the initial post-operative consultation at the end of week one. They may remove the drain tubes and sutures at this time.

At this point, the surgeon may recommend a mild breast exercise routine to enhance the surgical results. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiran Gill receives patients from Naples, Marco Island, South Florida, and other towns and neighborhoods in this region of the state for breast augmentation.
