Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure has become relatively less invasive over the past years due to advancements in surgical techniques and the availability of superior implant qualities. During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will explain the risks associated with breast augmentation surgery to the patient.
The first concern of a dedicated surgeon will be to enable the patient to make a well-informed decision. Naples Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kiran Gill, provides breast augmentation to patients in Naples, Marco Island, South Florida, and surrounding communities.
Risks Associated with Implants
Certain risks in breast augmentation surgery are associated with the presence of silicone or saline breast implants.
Capsular Contracture
After the implants are inserted surgically in the breast tissue, the body initiates its healing process. This will lead to the development of scar tissue around the breast implants. But in certain cases, the scar tissue may constrict or tighten and exert too much pressure on the implants.
This pressure may cause the implants to get squeezed because of the contracting scar tissue. This leads to the implants losing their shape, moving from their position, or becoming damaged. Some patients may experience pain as the breast capsule hardens. The plastic surgeon may recommend breast revision cosmetic surgery to resolve this problem.
Implant Rippling
In certain cases, the breast implant size may be excessively large in comparison to the available breast skin to cover the implant adequately. This can lead to folds or wrinkles in the implant causing a rippling impact on the skin’s surface.
This effect distorts the natural appearance of the breasts. An experienced breast surgeon will suggest the optimal implant size and shape with the goal of minimizing the risk of implant rippling.
Implant Shifting or Rupture
In exceptional cases, the implant may shift from its original position shortly after the procedure. There is a higher risk of displacement with larger implants. The risk of implant rupture is associated with all implant types.
In the case of saline implant rupture, it will instantly deflate, and the patient will notice it. However, ruptures in silicone implants are noticeable only during a breast MRI. The patient will have to undergo implant removal or replacement to rectify these issues.
Surgery-related Risks
Infection
The risk of infection is higher during and right after the breast implant surgery. The surgical venue should have sterile conditions, and the patient should ensure that the incision sites are clean and dry to mitigate this risk.
Seroma and Hematoma
Accumulation of fluid under the skin following breast augmentation surgery can cause swelling of the tissue. The risks of seroma and hematoma can be minimized if the surgeon places temporary drain tubes in the incision sites.
Numbness in Nipples
There may be an alteration in sensation, sensitivity or numbness in the nipple region following breast augmentation surgery. While this condition resolves by itself, it may become permanent in some exceptional cases.
Unfavorable Scarring
There will be some amount of scarring in breast augmentation. However, the scarring can be made less conspicuous by placing the incisions discreetly.
