Breast augmentation plastic surgery procedure is designed to improve the size, fullness, and volume of breasts through the insertion of breast implants. In specific instances, the cosmetic surgeon may suggest a breast implant procedure to correct asymmetrical breasts or as part of a reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy.
In the last one decade, breast augmentation has become a highly popular procedure, especially with developments in surgical techniques as well as new and better qualities of FDA-approved breast implants.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiran Gill provides breast augmentation to patients in Naples, Marco Island, South Florida, and other cities and towns in the amazing state of Florida.
Ideal Candidates
Women who are dissatisfied with naturally small sized breasts in proportion to their body may be suitable candidates for breast augmentation surgery. In some instances, even women who have regular sized breasts may seek breast augmentation surgery to increase their breast size for more voluptuous breast appearance.
Women who want their breasts to look more symmetrical, or who require breast restoration after a mastectomy or breast injury would also make good candidates. Certain women may lose breast volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding. These candidates can restore their breast appearance to its pre-pregnancy state with this surgery.
Surgical Procedure
The cosmetic surgeon will perform breast implant surgery with the patient under general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia, depending on the individual case. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and it may take around 2 to 3 hours in the operating room.
The procedure starts with the surgeon placing discreet incisions in pre-determined areas. The incision placement options typically include transaxillary incision (in the underarm), periareolar incision (surrounding the areola) or inframammary incision (within the breast crease).
During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will discuss the placement of the implants, incision preferences, and implant type with the patient. Breast augmentation is one of the more customizable surgeries. This enables the surgeon to address the patient’s individual cosmetic goals more precisely.
The surgeon will create a cavity within the breast tissue through the incisions. Silicone or Saline implants will be inserted in the breast tissue either above or beneath the pectoral muscle. The placement position of the implants is determined in advance at the time of surgical planning.
After the surgeon places the implants in their position securely, they will close the incision with sutures. In certain instances, the breast augmentation cosmetic surgery may be performed along with a breast lift for better outcomes. This is vital if the skin in the breast area is quite lax and the breasts do not have firmness anymore.
Recovery and Outcomes
In the initial few days after the procedure, a majority of patients will experience mild pain and soreness in the breasts. Pain medications can help to provide relief. The patient should remain at home in the initial week to enable safe healing.
The surgeon will provide the patient with a special surgical bra. The patient should wear this all the time for several weeks to enhance healing. Most of the patients will be able to return to their normal routine within 7 to 10 days of the surgery.
